Everyone’s been talking lately about their Google PageRanks. I’ve heard many bloggers suffering unpredictable rollercoaster rise and fall ride. Either they are happy to get their normal ranks again, or frustrated why they had suddenly been down on the dumps.

Just incase you’ve felt some search engine (especially Google) wrath being subjected to you and your blog (or want to know the reason why that wrath has been sentenced to you) I’ve prepared a compilation of things that you might have probably done forcing the search engines to do some spanking in your ranks.

Get Spanked Method #1: Participating in Link Building Schemes

Google Webmasters guidelines clearly said, “thou shall not participate in link building schemes’. Yet ironically, most bloggers resort to link building schemes than practicing organic SEO. Those schemes may be a little bit tempting. Still, you need to practice yourself to stay away from them.

Get Spanked Method #2: Linking To Bad Sites

You might tell yourself, “I’m not linking to bad sites. I know pretty well the sites I’m linking to and they are all good with a decent reputation to match”. Let me ask, how sure are you? You could be linking to a blog managed by the nicest blogger in the world but it’s still considered as a bad site by the search engines. Or you might think that you’re linking to a good site only to know that the good site you thought has turned it’s image to a complete 360° months ago. Nobody is good or bad forever. Every site changes. Therefore, you should make it a habit to check the site you are linking to every once in a while.

Get Spanked Method #3: Spamming Here and There

Aside from the fact that you also get punished for spamming the social community or network you are in, spamming could also get you in trouble with the search engines. Need I say more? Everyone just hates spam. Even spammers hates getting spam too.

Get Spanked Method #4: Challenging the Search Engines

I don’t know how other bloggers do it. But once in a while, I get to hear someone being punished by search engines for making this new promotional scheme which go against the webmasters guidelines. Still, I’ve also seen these bloggers slowly rising up after their very very very bad fall.

Get Spanked Method #5: (Over) Monetizing Your Blog

Ever heard about rumors that search engines (or is it only Google?) are trying to punish blogs selling valuable reviews and links? Well, they need to come up with a good way to detect them first of all. Search engines are so traditional and prefer that everybody get links from the traditional method (organic SEO). Still, how do they do it? I’ve been to skeptic about their process, if they even had one.

Get Spanked Method #6: Buying Links

Again on the monetizing your blog issue. They just don’t like the idea of advertisers going on the easy route of buying links to their site to boost traffic and rankings (because of the bought backlinks). And again, I want to know how do they monitor or detect this? Is it me or does anybody agree that search engines are trying to reduce the digits on our paychecks?

Summing up, search engines just want everybody to be as decent and as fair as possible without taking the shortcuts to increase ranks, or shedding bucks in the process. Plus they don’t like someone doing some ingenious scheme under their noses. In the first place, I think we all agree that doing something against the search engines law is one big and bad idea.
