By some unexplanaible reason, I got to the Google Fun Facts page. Haha. It's good too know my suspicion is right! Google really did originate from the word googol! Actually, it's more of a term than a word. Googol refers to a number followed by a hundred zeros (I knew that waaay long ago!)
The funny thing is, I have heard googol first before I had known google. Weird. I was a kid back then and I was wondering about numbers and why so many kids curse math. Googol's like the highest term available in counting (but as we all know, numbers go to infinity). It's just good to know I was right! Google is from Googol! Sweet!
There are other cool things mentioned in the funfacts. Here are my favorites:
- Google receives daily search requests from all over the world, including Antarctica. (why am I not suprised? :D)
- Users can restrict their searches for content in 35 non-English languages, including Chinese, Greek, Icelandic, Hebrew, Hungarian and Estonian. To date, no requests have been received from beyond the earth's orbit, but Google has a Klingon interface just in case. (Aliens googling? Now that's something we don't see everyday. lol. I'm waiting for the day this happens. Good thing google's prepared, 'just in case' as they put it. Nice!)
- Google has a world-class staff of more than 2,668 employees known as Googlers. The company headquarters is called the Googleplex. (looks Googlerific to me)
- The basis of Google's search technology is called PageRank™, and assigns an "importance" value to each page on the web and gives it a rank to determine how useful it is. However, that's not why it's called PageRank. It's actually named after Google co-founder Larry Page. (So this how PageRank started. Good to know. :D)
Googlers are multifaceted. One operations manager, who keeps the Google network in good health is a former neurosurgeon. One software engineer is a former rocket scientist. And the company's chef formerly prepared meals for members of The Grateful Dead and funkmeister George Clinton. (Now that's what we call diversity!)
Cool facts! I was right! Yeah!
