I’ve stared from scratch and with virtually no capital or information to lead me. With my passion, and mostly my gut, I tried to work out the idea of a 15-year old taking into the plunge of professional blogging. Since then, I’ve never looked back.

But as I’ve explained in my previous post, I’ve realized that now is the right time to move on. As I go into the academic route, I cannot afford the time and energy that my once regular blogging had demanded of me. And so, I’ve announced that I’m letting go of Better Blogging For Bloggers and is looking for a new owner (the best possible) that can rebuild and catapult it further into the blogosphere.

After almost two months of searching for the worthiest candidate, finally, I’ve come to find them.

Today, I am very pleased to announce that Enlist Media, a premium company of professional blogs, will now include Better Blogging For Bloggers in its network.

About Enlist Media

“Enlist Media is a network of professional blogs encompassing diverse topics like finance, travel, automobile, technology, health, and environment. It creates a platform to explore, contribute, share, and connect the world by bringing bloggers, readers, prospective customers and media together…”
-From www.EnlistMedia.com/about

I’ve visited the site and tried to research about this company that wants my blog. With all honesty, I was very impressed with how they run their networks of blog and by the team that handles them. Their dedication to quality and to building a community gave my high hopes for my blog. Hopes that in their hands, my blog will grow even better than I can possibly make.

Meet the Enlist Media Team

There are the people that are significant to the foundation of Enlist Media- the very same people who will now operate and ensure the growth of Better Blogging For Bloggers.

Ritesh Sarvaiya, CEO

There’s too much to say about this person. For one, he is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Enlist Media- a company that runs hundred of prime blogs and manages a large team of seasoned writers, web designers, and SEO professionals. Ritesh is a very driven person that exudes excellence in leadership and organizational skills and has a gift of motivating the various people that are part of Enlist Media. His diverse knowledge, from psychology to Information Technology to environmental research, had been a tremendous asset to the development of Enlist Media.

Tejal Sarvaiya, Content Planning

Ritesh’s wife, Tejal will be very much influential to the development of this blog- and of many other professional blogs under Enlist Media. She’s the powerhouse trainer of successful content writers that are notorious for their quality write-ups in various niches.

Bhavik Sarvaiya, Chief Operating Officer & Mehul Brahmbhatt, Chief Technical Officer

Bhavik and Mehul, as Ritesh says, are among the pillars for the realization and conception of Enlist Media.

Bhavik Sarvaiya, Chief Operating Officer, used his urge to make a difference in the internet media in turning his passion into a full-time profession. His role includes maximizing traffic and providing the blogs with appropriate search engine exposure with various marketing tools. When he is not busy with Enlist Media’s operational infrastructure enhancement, he motivates a team of 30-40 SEO professionals that drives the content to the world.

On the other hand, this young and motivated professional, Mehul Brahmbhatt, Chief Technical Officer is the chief architect, developer, and technologist, responsible for creatively designing, implementing, and operating the vast network directory of Enlist Media. He develops and manages products and functionality, which, quite significantly, augments the user experience on Enlist Media, while presenting advertisers efficient and innovative ways to reach their audience. Mehul’s ingenious and creative ideas help Enlist Media to be ahead of the competition, always. He has a professional post graduate degree in IT.

Last but not the least, there is also Avinash Singh, Content Head. He is a man of many talents, whose career permitted him to hold wide range titles. With over 12 years of varied experience in Quality Control, Process Design and Re-engineering, and Content Editing, Avinash Singh brings his vast knowledge to Enlist Media and heads a team of 30 content writers, who write professional blogs on diverse topics like travel, finance, business, automobile, health, technology, etc.

The Dream Team

Together, and with a few more unmentioned yet equally important people who’re part of Enlist Media, they’ll be the one who’ll lead Better Blogging For Bloggers into it’s new beginning. Haha), even so, let me at least share this one last time.

Better Blogging For Bloggers was a blog established by a 15-year old back in the summer of 2007 (I was bored, and I love to write… so it made sense to devote my whole summer to this). Blogging for me, was something I considered, not just a passion, but learning playground.

Time and time again, I see people complaining… “Liane, why do you have such a very long domain name?” Actually, I forgot. I just remembered having that name since time in memorial, and of course I don’t want to do away with it. My domain name is more than just a name, it’s a message. That everyone, anyone, can be and will be a better blogger.

Right now actually, I realized it’s a pain in the head memorize by a split-second, but I guess due to three year’s worth of socialization and keeping in touch with the blogosphere, it now has something Seth Godin calls a ‘brand’.

Why am I leaving Better Blogging For Bloggers?

And this perhaps, is the part you’re so curious to hear.

The truth is, I am NOT leaving on my own free will. I am simply forced by circumstances to do so.

It's a long story actually. But in summary, it's this...

This year, and the year before that have been a very crucial point in my life. I left home, and basically my carefree days and went to college. I knew at this point, it’ll be hard to manage both my undergraduate studies and blogging, but nevertheless, I pursued, thinking I really could..

I’ve had some long blogging pauses here and there, but in general, I believe I still carried a balance between my studies and this blog. Of course last summer, I made it a point to be extra active. Which I did with the release of the Blogging Blunders report and even of the newsletter.

Then came my second year in college.

After just mere 2 weeks, the academic readings that I need to finish (not including other subjects) have covered my entire desk. I barely had the luxury to sleep, much more blog. Before, even with a busy sched, I still had the time to clear up for 1-2 hours a day and check on Better Blogging For Bloggers. Now, no matter how hard I try, I just couldn't.

And believe me, I tried. This blog meant a lot to me than you can imagine.

When and Why Did I Decide to Leave?

I never wanted to. Truly.

First week in class, I already predicted the stressful months lying ahead of me. But I tried to hold on thinking I can still blog. Then came the second week and I started to feel the futility of trying to balance blogging and school. On my third week, I finally decided to do what’s best for me blog.

I’m deciding to leave because I don’t want Better Blogging For Bloggers to turn stale and inactive like most blogs do. I know this blog holds potential. Since the time I gave it it’s name, I imagined it to run alongside credible and trustworthy blogs (doesn’t every blogger do?).

I realize at this moment, Better Blogging For Bloggers still hasn’t reached it’s maximum potential. But I know, with those 3 years of effort, the race to success could be close.

The bottomline is, I decided to leave because I don’t want to stand in the way and drag my own blog down (which is what I’m doing right now). It’s sad. I know.

Sometimes, you have to now what’s good for your blog. Even if it means taking yourself out of the picture.

That’s the extreme case. Unfortunately, that’s the case I’m facing right now.

Liane is Looking For a New Owner of Better Blogging For Bloggers

Now comes the big announcement.

I am looking for someone who’d be interested to buy this blog and take over. It’s particularly important that you satisfy the 3rd and 4th items. The first two items can be negotiated as long as you show good proof of your skill as a blogger.

What do you get when you buy Better Blogging For Bloggers?

Obviously, you will get the blog and the domain (with the additional .info subdomain too if you want.

Below is the complete list:
• The Better Blogging For Bloggers Blog
• The .com and .info domain of this blog
• All the branding materials/images
• All accounts associated with the blog (RSS feeds, Technorati, etc.)

Beyond the obvious things, you will also get:
• The 70 Ideas For Your Next 70 Posts product (yes, a product. Selling price of $14.95 per copy)
• The Blogging Blunders report (free report as of now but I’ll give full rights should the new owner decide to sell it)
• The BlogStarted ebook (a blogging tips ebook I created 2 years ago. But with three years of social networking and connecting/partnering with a lot of bloggers and readers, the brand of this blog has grown steadily over the years.

If you market it to some A-List bloggers, you’d see that it’s recognized too.

Interested to be the next owner? Please Contact Me to get more details

Email Liane (me) at webloggr@gmail.com or you can use this contact form.

I would not be selling this at a buy and sell market since I want to personally talk to interested people. The next owner would be determined by two main factors. First, 50% goes to the amount one is willing to pay for this blog. Second, the remaining 50% will be determined by the expertise of the interested buyer.

This is the fairest thing I could come up with (I just don’t want the next owner to be the highest payer), it must be balance. He or she needs to have what it takes too. With me leaving, I at least want to leave it in good hands.

(Interested to have Better Blogging For Bloggers? Go here.)

To everyone,

Please see watch out for my next (and last) post.

This is not my goodbye yet. I plan to write a dedicated post for that. I at least owe a decent good bye to you right? 3 years. Sigh. Hopefully by my next post, there will be a new owner. And I’d like to have the pleasure of introducing that person to you.

Whoever that is, I wish you’d support him/her as much as you’ve supported me.

Thank you very much. This is still not the end. At least for now.

-Liane

My Adventure On Using the MailChimp Newsletter (and why it’s not Aweber)

Sorry I can’t just help putting the word ‘adventure’ like this is some part of Indiana Jones’ diary. But it does sound better to go with MailChimp right?

If you’ve read my last post, you would’ve already known the people who subscribes to my newsletter If you still haven’t read it, bet I can convince you.

Anyway, today, I want to share to you my experience on using MailChimp’s email newsletter services. I know most of you guys are nuts about Aweber (that hegemonic company). Don’t get me wrong. I am too. It was definitely sitting in my number 1 spot of an email service provider, but I decided last minute to go with MailChimp.

I’ll tell you why, and on the process, I’ll share to how MailChimp made an impression to me.

Aweber Versus MailChimp

To tell you the truth, I really vouch for these two companies. Whether you choose Aweber or MailChimp, it doesn’t matter for me. Both companies have excellent service, with excellent track record and excellent support.

Of course, there’s a little bit of a difference.

Most people who’s inclined to internet marketing, business stuff would choose Aweber. Meanwhile, those people who need more social media function (and integration) would opt to go for MailChimp. There’s got to be a reason why Mashable choose MailChimp as a powerful social media tool right?

Yeah, the chimps definitely got their groove on.

But still, in the end the choice would be up to you. If you like Aweber (and it’s $1 free trial), go for it.

So why exactly did I choose MailChimp?

For practical reasons I find their free trial version more economic than all email providers.

→ Stay under a subscriber list of 500 or below and you don’t have to pay a cent. This appeals to people who’s on a. on a budget, b. just using a list for a small number or c. is just trying out for a newsletter without having to give in credit card numbers and upfront payments.

→ With the free trial account, you also get 3,000 email sends per month. Well, even if it’s limited in a sense, 3,000 seems to be more than enough for one month’s worth of campaign

→ Of course you get the perks too of using the services of a great, reputable company (and the security that comes with it). Companies like Mizilla and Fujistu use it.

All in all, those are the reasons why I choose MailChimp

(note: you'd understand this better if you've read Who Subscribes To My Newsletter)

My Adventure With MailChimp

Well, I think I should rename the above subheading to “the adventure of a total newbie to newsletters”.
I honestly had a hard time starting my first newsletter list. There’s just so much to learn and so much to do. Of course I don’t really blame MailChimp, I bet I’d have the same frustrations with any other similar companies because of my pure lack of experience on using it.

But anyway, there are the reasons why I love MailChimp all the more is because it’s Idiot-compatible.

Pure newbies (like me) would get less of the headscratchin’ because of the easy to use (and understand) interface as well as the simplicity of the applications. And speaking of the apps, there’s lots in MailChimp. My fave so far are the integration of social media tools (so while you send your emails, it’s automatically posted on your social media account too).

Though honestly it took me more than an hour to discover that. LOL

The “Oops” Moment

I had this funny and really embarrassing story to share.

So there I was, trying to set up everything that’s needed for my first list. After that, I went to write an autoresponder email to welcome the new subscribers.

At first, I didn’t actually know how to do it. I found this button that says write in plain text message, clicked on it and figured that’s maybe the spot to write my welcome email. I finished it of course and was happy with what I composed. A day later (when it’s set to be received), my inbox got the welcome email (I subscribed to my own so I can check the newsletters).

Instead of the email I wrote, I received instate a template email. As in an email with sample texts and all. Later on, I went to find out that after you write in plain text email, you should also follow-up to write an html email (just a copy-paste job actually) because the email that the subscriber receives depends on what feature he has activated (as for me, I had html activated that’s why I haven’t seen the plain text email).

Still Getting The Hang Of It

If you’ve been among the first who hopped into my newsletter, apologies for that template email you received (embarrassing I know. haha). I promised to be better on writing my emails. And to be more aware of the features in my admin panel ;)

So for now, that’s a wrap on why I use MailChimp. And oh, that reminds me to remind you why you need to be a part of this!

Who Subscribes to the Better Blogging For Bloggers Newsletter?

And yes, this blog now has one. A newsletter ;)

I don’t plan to install one of those pesky pop-up opt-in scripts that I’m so fond of closing as soon as I see them (I’m annoyed at them honestly). Nor am I going to place tons of banners and arrows that lures your eye to a subscription box. There’s really no begging that’s going to happen (something like “please, please, please subscribe to my newsletter!”). Oh no, there’s none of that.

That being said, you’d ask, how o I gain subscribers to my newsletter? More than that, WHO are those people that is, and will be, a part of it?

These are the people who subscribes to the Better Blogging For Bloggers Newsletter

→The people who are subscribed gets the Blogging Blunders report for FREE

The Blogging Blunders is a special report I created to spread the lessons that I believe can save your blog. Packed with almost 3 years worth of experience, I concentrated all the golden rules that I’ve learned in blogging and compiled them into a fast-read report totaling only to 18 pages- straight-to-the-point, simple yet powerful.

If you feel that you’re blog needs a push, if you’re fed up with blogging, or even if you’re just starting out, The Blogging Blunders Report will help you see a new light in blogging. You can learn more about it here.

→The people who are subscribed gets a staggering 50% off coupon code the 70 Ideas Poster

What’s the hardest part about blogging? Getting new ideas to blog about definitely is the hardest.

Realizing that one great problem, I created the 70 Ideas For Your Next 70 Posts – Poster Edition.

Once a blog post compilation of blogging ideas, I developed it into a much useful tool that so many bloggers began to love (and use with so much ease!). What’s more simple, yet inspiring than an ‘idea poster’ you can see everyday at your workspace right? With the 70 Ideas Poster (yep, that’s the nickname), you can do that! And oh, did I mention it has idea categories (from promotion to monetization) that can help you? You can learn more about it here.

→The people who are subscribed gets a chance to be featured in a special blog review

Yes, that’s right. If you are one of those who subscribes to the blog newsletter, you get a chance to get yourself (and your blog of course) reviewed here. I will randomly draw subscriber names each month and the lucky winner will get his or her review published (written by me of course!).

But it’s not just that. See the next reason.

→The people who are subscribed gets promotional and consultation privileges from this blog

I’m pushing a blog newsletter is to reach out and have constant contact to people like you. That being said, I figured the best way to make that possible is to help you out with anything (blogging-related) that you’re up to. Got a new product or service? Let me know about it and I might drop a line in my post (and share in my tweets!). Frustrated over something? Send over an email and I’ll see what I can do a.s.a.p.

The things above defines the people who subscribes, and will subscribe, to the Better Blogging For Bloggers Newsletter.

If you are one of those people, you know But if you’re an envisioner, dreamer, and basically a gut-instinct follower like me, this means something else. It’s a new challenge which I hope would finally kick start the young entrepreneur in me.

I will talk less about Blog Design Team (because I will issue another post for that) here than a much, much more important lesson I’ve learned over the years.

Be brave enough for your ideas.

Almost three years ago, back when I was still was a blogger nobody (tss. Things were less complicated when you’re a nobody), I had this great idea of running a successful blog. The picture was already in my mind. I had plans. I did action. I tried to learn everything I can – and did. But you know what, something held me back.

I was afraid.

Half of my mind was thinking that it was possible with the right kind of willpower. The other half thought of it as futile in the first place.

So while I was trying to build a good blog, at the same time, I was hesitant of what I was doing. To top it of, I was pretty much nervous. I was fifteen years old that time! All I knew was how to keep adding more friends on my social media accounts.

That Fear Cost Me Time… and Wasted My Efforts

I’d have to say things went considerably okay (of course if not, this blog wouldn’t have made it this far). The operative word though was ‘okay’. Not bad, not good, just okay.

And like what I told you in my Blogging Blunders free report, okay is very much mediocre.

I was posting regularly, slowly building my subscriber list, trying to connect with a blogger circle and more. At some months, I was doing pretty good. Then there are those down months when I just can’t help but doubt the whole thing (15 year old’s have a lot of mood swings you know).
My strength was in coming up with ideas, my weakness is losing the right vision to what I really want.

Now, all the 'what ifs' haunted me.

One of Them, is an eBook Called BLOGSTARTER

You remembered the last time when I asked you about what to do with the domain BLOGSTARTER.NET?
Well, I haven’t actually bought the domain without a purpose. There was one. And that purpose is called “The BLOGSTARTER eBook”. It was the same ebook I created back when I was still 15 years old (yes, my first ebook, and yes, I was fifteen back then).

The original title was (guess!) – Better Blogging For Bloggers the eBook. I used to give it away for people who subscribe to my RSS feeds. A year after, I pulled it out thinking I could cultivate it as an informational product and push my blogging to a higher level.

After months of the ebook sitting idly in my computer memory, I decided to work on it. And so, I began to rewrite it. Deleting obsolete tips, and adding in more updated resources and stuff. Within a month or so, I finished the whole thing!

I was excited as a buzzing bee. I started creating plans for its release, studying how to launch ebooks and already contacting possible partners because I want to make it a big time product that people would swarm over (sorry for all the bug reference by the way. Haha).

Then, the excitement took a downward spiral.

My partners eventually set to postpone the launch because of their freelance work. This set out a bit of a conflict since I repeatedly promise to my readers that I’m about to release it in before the new year sets in (December 2009). But still, my partners were busy.

Don’t get me wrong. They (my partners) are a bunch of great talented people, and I don’t blame them for anything. My time plans are just not in sync with them.

Sadly, I had to do what I had to do. I ended the partnership and planned to go back to plan A – me, myself and I.

And so again, I went back to research. Trying to test and compare other similar products, I said to myself… ‘gee, these are all good! How can I measure up to that?!”.

I began to doubt. I know in the first place that my eBook was just meant for starters (newbies). But I still am afraid that it’ll be labeled as a worthless product compared to the advanced ones already in the market.

To further insinuate my fears, at that time, the Problogger eBook has gathered widespread buzz, and then came another one that made a lot of people excited, Blogging To The Next Level.
Right then and there, I said to myself. I. Am. Doomed.

And so, I backed out on my ideas. Putting the plans in jeopardy and completely making the worst possible case of my vision.

The BLOGSTARTER ebook never got released.

Then There’s The Great Realization

Ta-Da!

Defeat is a matter of acceptance. And guess what, I am not willing to accept it.

We always make bad decisions. I make a lot every month if only you know. But the thing about it is that you really do honestly learn IF you put some time to reflect. The important note here is that you have to reflect. You don’t learn from something unless you spend some time to figure out what you did wrong.

Listen people, learning from a mistake isn’t automatic. It’s a choice and it’s a responsibility.
So here’s the big lesson I learned –

If you have an idea, and you believe in it, you MUST FIGHT FOR IT no matter what.

Don’t stop. Don’t give up. Don’t be intimidated. And if you were, keep looking up. Crashing to failure only fuels the necessity for success.

On Being Brave, or Trying To At Least

So here I am now, working to get back in the right direction again (last time I checked I got back to the good course). I just signed up for an email delivery service to put the BlogStarter ebook to good use, possible using it as a giveaway to finally start building a list.

Then of course, there were other good suggestions.

For the BlogDesignTeam, the idea is still fresh. This time, I am much more prepared and optimistic. With careful planning, good execution, and a braver mindset (as to not be intimidated by those monster-sized popular names), I believe things will work out.

Then again, I forgot to tell you I’m still saving up for my start-up capital. But that’s another story of course.

The Blogging Blunders (Free) Report

Hello bloggers,

Over the time, I've been trying to learn the ropes of blogging trying to constantly see new methods, tips and tricks that can improve your blog - and this blog too of course. With Better Blogging For Bloggers, I shared what I could - and did.

Right now, I have another thing to share to you. A simple yet powerful lesson.

The Blogging Blunders.

What is the Blogging Blunders Report About?

No. It's not about the ultimate secret that powerful bloggers have kept from you (hint: there's none!)
No. It's not about the surefire method that'll catapult you to success.
No. It's not about how to be a six-figure blogger within a day (impossible).

Yes. It's about lessons that can save your blog.

These lessons are based from my personal experience (now amounting to almost three years) when it comes to blogging. There's no ultimate secret, there's no surefire method, but there is such a thing as guidelines to avoid failure.

This is my attempt to recapture and compile the truth and to hopefully shed a new light on building a better blog. Now that quite a deal isn't it?

Realistically speaking, here's the question for thousands of average bloggers out there: is opening yourself to blog consultations worth the effort?

Definitely.

Almost a year ago, I began toying with the idea of putting a time charge at my blog consultations. Not long after that, I realized the idea is not only very viable but hold a lot of benefits as well. And so, I began my journey as a blogging mentor.

Actually, there are three reasons why I did this.

First, to establish and promote value and authority. You can always ramble all you want on your specialization ability with regards to your niche, but nothing works better (and tenfold as fast) as putting an actual proving-and-testimonial system (people who come to consult you).

Building authority means being able to spread whatever skill you have over your following and metting (or exceeding) their expectations. More than that, this is where the ultimate PR power comes from - word of mouth.

Second, to put to use (and practice) the skill you gain. I've always believed that experience is the ultimate teacher. If you don't set out to test on real people the 'expertise' you've always talked about, then I don't see the point of mastering it in the first place.

It's all about results. Always has been, and always will be.

Third, and the last reason is of course, as a monetization method. This is what I personally refer to as 'fuel money' - meaning money that let's you continue to do what you want to do. The thing about blog consultations is that while you are sharing what you know and helping others out, at the same time, you get a form of compensation that lets you do more. A definite win-win situation in my book..

How Do You Start a Blog Consultation Service?

For starters, you just have to announce it.

Okay, well maybe there's still a few things to plan. Let's backtrack a little bit.

Starting a blog consultation service requires you create your set of consultation packages and the rules and conditions that will operate before, during and after consultation.

Here are the things I considered when I opened my blog mentoring program.

Purpose - have a definite purpose for your consultation. Always specify what you can and can't talk about. The danger is when you fail to tell your student about the boundaries of your expertise, and let's face it - people always like a one-stop-shop 'guru'. For example, if your topic is about seo, be sure to include your specialty (ie you might be teaching white hat seo and your student is keen to learn a lot of black hat tricks).

Consultation plans (or packages) - you can always go for a single $___ per hour or per 30-minutes plan. But for best results, provide a variety of choices to suit the needs of your student (ie maybe s/he wants to talk for a longer period to you). Have plans that can be adjusted can also mean a greater revenue for you.

Terms and conditions - you must clearly and distinctly state your terms and conditions BEFORE someone signs up for your blog mentoring service. This includes your refund policy (if present), how you plan to conduct your consultation, what happens when someone isn't satisfied etc.

Communication method - clearly the most important one. I used to do my blog consultation on a report review method (meaning I check the blog and write a report of my findings and how to improve it). Later on, I changed the model and made it into sessions thru email and chat (basically making it more interactive). You can do something similar, or communicate via phone or Skype (which is cheaper).

Payment method - last but not the least. To make things easier, I use PayPal to receive payments. But if you have other options in mind, then go for it, just make sure your client can easily send money whatever method that is.

(See my Blog Mentoring Program Here)

But Wait, Where Do You Look For Clients?

That's the first big question that haunted me back then. Not until I realized I should go with the obvious - target my reader base first. And you should too.

It isn't a surprise that my first students are those who read my blog in the first place. That's where you get to think how many more people out there would pay for a small fraction of your 24-hour day in exchange for some enlightenment.

This is an additional pro for consultations - being able to leverage yourself directly at your audience.

In terms of promoting your consultation service, the key is to always build a hype about it in your blog (make a post or always refer to it in new posts). Also, don't forget to bring up that fact in your social networking circle and just about everywhere else. Someone might not be interested in it right now, but hopefully in the future s/he will remember to refer at you.

Last but not the least, the most important part is to gather testimonials. The best proof that your worth something should always come from another person - not just you bragging about it.

Share Your Questions (and Experiences if You Have!)

I can only tell on stuffs that's on my mind right now. So if you are thinking about opening yourself to being a blog consultant, then feel free to fire more questions.

If you have experiences about this, care to share too. I'll definitely talk about in the next post if a good discussion arises. So speak out!

If You Have the Domain BLOGSTARTER.NET, What Would You Do With it?

Can I challenge you to flex your creative muscles?

I just want to pinch myself right now. You see, if I haven’t logged in at my GoDaddy account- which for some reason I only visit one every three months- I would almost have forgotten that I actually bought (and still own) the domain BLOGSTARTER.NET.

I bought it around December supposedly for an ebook that I’m planning to release bearing the same domain name. But because that project wasn’t pushed through (long story, I’ll tell you in the future), the domain was left to, well, stay idle in the internet blackhole.

So here’s where you come in.

I’m just psyched up right now. You know, very much game and excited to start something new (this kind of behavior led me to develop the 70 Ideas Poster product). I’m currently toying up with some fresh ideas, but ‘two heads are better than one’ right? It’ll be great to see if you have some good ideas up your sleeve that you can share with me.

Again, the question is: If you have the domain BLOGSTARTER.NET, what would you do with it?

The only catch is the ‘make-it-a-blog’ game plan is already ruled out for the reason that, well, it’s kinda obvious and that’s already the point why Better Blogging For Bloggers exist.
Maybe a service? Or a resource site? Or a forum where newbie bloggers can start?

Help me come up with something creative!

Looking forward to your ideas,

Liane

How to Make a Blog Post Go Viral in Facebook

When it comes to utilizing Facebook traffic, a lot of us seems to get stuck on just building static fan pages and watching our fan count go up. First off, you’re under-estimating the power of Facebook as a viable traffic source, and second, there’s obviously so much more you can get from it.

In this post, I’ll show you how to make a blog post go viral in the Facebook community. It’s a good trick that every blogger should keep in mind.

Why Facebook is Effective in Making Viral Posts Campaigns

Let’s compare it to it’s closest social network rival – Twitter (yes, forget about MySpace). The problem with Twitter is that even if it’s so much easy to start promoting your posts, the discussion quality is very limited (140 characters) and that it easily disappears into online oblivion once the new tweets start appearing.

Here’s where Facebook comes in strongest.

Discussion is free and unlimited – there’s no character limit and/or restriction to your post promotion as well as to the feedback that you can receive.

The ability to make it viral – It has Twitter’s tagging feature, only more powerful. Once a person is tagged, every update/comment will be notified to him making him see your campaign for n number of times. Plus, the sharing feature works great too.

Updates and statuses (which contains your promotion campaign) doesn’t easily disappear - In fact, the Facebook strategy is to combine an algorithm of “recentness” and the “activity” that’s happening in the status.

How to Make Your Facebook Posts Go Viral

The key here is that you have to remember the concept of Facebook. It’s where people choose their private lives to be public. Interaction, connection, activities, and most of all interests.

Therefore, the biggest factor for making posts viral on Facebook is it’s relevancy to real life. By that I mean posts that have a pragmatic purposes, news that are timely and have momentum, facts, funny/entertaining/travel/gossip/technological information and basically just anything that would be of interest to a person. For example, see LifeHack posts.

Be warned, rarely does serious business posts, or those advance technical tutorials work on a facebook campaign.

Remember the keyword: think personal, think interesting.

Steps in Making a Viral Facebook Post

Here’s where having a Facebook Fan Page comes in handy (see Better Blogging For Bloggers Facebook Fan Page).

If your blog has a fan page, consider being active and having constant interaction with your followers. It works the same way as being active in Twitter. The more people make an effort to see your updates, the more chances for it to go viral

The best way however (in my opinion) is to utilize a personal account. Statuses from personal accounts are published better on your friend’s homepage rather than a fan page status (which always looks like a blatant promotion scheme).

As you very well know, it’s so easy to start a personal account. But here’s a trick. In your new account, instead of just your name add a tag after. Ex. Jack Sparrow – Blogger of Pirates of the Caribbean. It has a twist of authority appeal added to it.

Start adding your real friends and family (if you like), your avid readers, and anyone who’se interested in your blog topic (hint: check out their interests on the information profile).

Facebook Advertising Anyone?

If you have a bigger budget for promotion campaigns, then Facebook Advertising is another extremely viable method too (with a whole lot faster results). The basics work like any PPC campaign, but the edge of Facebook is it's ability to target real potential readers/clients with it's filtering methods.

It's only available in the fan pages account. Once you log in, you'll see a link offer to start a Facebook Advertising campaign. Guides like the Facebook Formula (a guide for facebook advertising) can show you a clearer picture on how things work.

If you're thinking of a bigger, more advance Facebook ad campaign, something that can automatically create ads in quick time, then go read 4HourAffiliate's take on his Facebook Ads Manager.

In conclusion,

Organic natural campaign or paid it might be, the bottom line remains the same. It needs to be able to reach out on a personal/emotional level of Facebook users (yes, people like you and me). If you have a dry, corporate like attitude towards your campaign, then forget it. Strike up and do some genuine connection of interest.

That and never ever spam anyone ;)

Create a Free Blog Report – The Start to Finish Guide

It’s better to give than to receive.

In the web, it’s not just because you’d have the bragging rights of being a generous person that ought to be kept an eye on, but because you can use that ‘free’ item for a lot of things – branding, promotion, marketing of an existing product, tribe building, authority establishment etcetera.

That’s a nifty list isn’t it? If you’re looking for a way to achieve all of that on the best possible way, the answer is simple. Create a free report that’ll showcase your expertise.

Previously, I’ve released a blog report entitled Blogging Blunders. Now, at the bare minimum, making an ebook would take from a week to a whole month (depending if you still need to research or to collaborate with people). The trickiest part, of course, is writing the report in the first place. After that, it’s just going to be a checklist of things in order to launch and distribute the report.

On this post, I’ll show you a guide on how I do it – from start to finish.

Stage 1 – Writing the Report

First stop is choosing the report topic. It doesn’t need to be comprehensive (like the usual ebooks on your niche). A report is just a targetive case study to a specific problem or area. That being said, your first step is to figure out your topic. You can also get ideas/inspiration from your previous posts (see the categories that you frequently write about).

Once you’ve chosen the right topic, the next step of course would be the hardest – the actual writing.

To make things easier, you would need to create an outline of your report (from Introduction to conclusion). It doesn’t need to have chapters as long as you can write in a sensible order. Tackle the easiest/basic concept first and work from there.

IDEA: Search at DocShare and Scribd.com for similar reports about your niche. These might give you more hints on creating your own report.

Always finish a report with a conclusion (otherwise, you’re leaving it hanging). In the conclusion, you have to synthesize everything you’ve written.

Stage 2 – Polishing the Report

Proofreading is an essential step to making a report. No matter how perfect your grammar is, mistakes are inevitable so you might want to do an extra check. If you have an extra cash, consider hiring a professional proofreader to do the job.

Copyright Policies - always write your copyright policies (also see license policies) in the report. If you give it away for free, I recommend that you allow sharing and disable modification or any other forms of use. You can see an example of this in my Blogging Blunders Report.

Get a professional ebook cover. Admittedly, there’s nothing wrong on having a simple text, but if you want to get that ‘pro’ feel to it and make it look brandable, try getting a professional ecover. If you have some design skills, try doing it on your own. But if you’re clueless to this, hire someone (as for me, I did my own ecover).

Convert to pdf. This should be the easiest step. There are lots of free pdf converters out there. You can try this one for example.

Stage 3 – Releasing and Spreading the Buzz

When your report’s ready to go, upload it immediately on your web server or to any file hosting site. You need to get the download link for others to get it.

First of, consider doing a pre-launch. Write a post about it – could be anything as long as you’re spreading the message to your readers that you’re working on something. This should build a sort of anticipation.

On the launch date, create an enticing post about your report (write details) and along it, include the download link. It could be a direct download link with no opt-in (meaning no newsletter subscription), or with opt-in. if you want to sell it, then that’s another matter entirely.

How to spread the buzz. Your first target should be your readers/followers and the bloggers directly inside your circle. These are your primary agents to help spread the buzz. Start a social networking campaign on all sites (Twitter, Facebook, Digg etc) that you have. Spread the word far and wide.

More ideas. Think of creative ideas, it can range to contests, giveaways, promotion offers and many more. The sky is the limit on how you can promote the report.

Stage 4 – The Aftermath

Once the launch fever has settled in, it’s time to just let your report be visible in your blog homepage. Allocate a special section in your blog homepage so your readers can still see. That report will have so many future uses you just have to wait and see. For example, chris garret uses a free report to increase RSS subscriptions in his blog. You might wanna try and do the same thing!

That’s about it. Now how about downloading my free report – The Blogging Blunders.

Hey Blogger, Take a Vacation!

Hello everyone, Liane here… and yes, I still exist. lol. I know this blog has remained stagnant for a while and there’s only one thing that can explain that- I took a vacation. A very long vacation at that.

(<--;btw, that's me walking on the seaweed stuck on the beach. haha)

Now, before the boring, self-centered, teen-ish story about my vacation, the first thing on my agenda is to say that my free report (which I promised on my previous post) have not been forgotten. I may have placed the writing of it on hiatus but I sure am working on finishing it now.

The Blogging Blunders report will come up soon as well as the winner of my past question, just stay tuned.

So now that we’re over my announcement, let’s get to the me-centered part.

My Blogging Break, and Why You Should Have One Too

I took a break without leaving any note to anyone so apologies to my friends and readers who may have thought that I’m done for good. Of course not. In fact, I think I’m on to my third year in blogging! So cheers to that.

The reason why I took a break is…. well actually it’s just by impulse. I woke up one day, faced my laptop and just couldn’t figure anything out. That’s why I suddenly thought, I need a break.

Or maybe I really need it to. I started my blogging break around my finals week in college. We call finals week as hell week and it’s not that hard to figure out why. At that point in time, I just want to clear up all my other activities that could distract me from studying… and it does sound sensible right?

Extended Blogging Break

After my finals week, I thought I could already got my sigh of relief. But nope. I received special assignments from my college organization that’s about to host a major national competition. I don’t have any big role, but the things assigned to me (mostly Photoshop and layouting works) really took a toll on me. And did I mention there’s deadlines? Phew.

And of course, after that org work was over, I felt that I still haven’t had any real break.

Really Extended Blogging Break

This is where I’d say I really gained my long awaited vacation. What did I do? Most of the time I just caught up with the sleep deprivation that college life gave me. In short, I lived what is called as a bum’s life. And gee, I’m lovin’ it!

There’s one particular event in my ‘bum’ calendar though that made me really happy. I hit the beach with a couple of friends! Ever heard of the infamous Boracay beach in the Philippines? Me and a couple of my high school friends went there for an early summer vacation.

Here are some pics I took at the beach!

The beautiful beach of Boracay (kinda seaweed season though)

And another picture of the beach!

Here's me enjoying the sun, sand and summer in general! (okay, i just made it rhyme. Haha)

It was a blast! We goofed around taking great pictures (mostly jump shots), ate at Halowhich (super great ice cold treat for summer) and just enjoyed the white sand and pristine blue waters of Boracay.

The Aftermath of My Blogging Break

Right now it’s summer and I don’t have classes so technically, I’m still on vacation. But in terms of blogging, I’m definitely back.

And now that I’m back, I have to good news to share to you. One is for this blog, the other is for me.

Drum rolls please!

First, Better Blogging For Bloggers is going to have it’s 3rd Anniversary Soon! Yay!

And Second, well, I’m just happy actually… that I got really high grades (thanks to my professors last semester!).

That break was worth it afterall. Haha. So your turn now, go get yourself a vacation and come back with a great story. Will look forward to read it.

Happy Summer everyone!

Share Your Blogging Blunders For My Free Report (and Win a Prize Too!)

I’m working on a blog report right now and I need your help. I will explain about that part later.

The report is about Blogging Blunders. It talks about all possible warning signs you should be aware of and the mistakes that you should avoid in blogging.

I just thought of a principle lately, it goes this way “If you don’t know what’s right, at least don’t do what’s wrong”. It makes perfect sense. Ultimately, you can never readily know the best way to do or accomplish things, but at least know what you shouldn’t do in the first place.

The Report which I’m about to give revolves around this concept.

Care to Answer The Question?

“What’s your personal blogging blunders?”

I already have a compiled list ready for my report. The thing is, I want to make sure that my list (which is based on my long observation of bloggers) is very much reflective to what you guys really think would qualify as major problems.

Especially to the seasoned bloggers, I need you to reflect your whole blogging career right now and focus on those areas where you felt you’ve committed a mistake. Care to also share how you managed to reverse the situation and turn it into an opportunity or learning experience.

Submit the Best Insight Could and You Could Win a Prize!

I’m giving away free copies of the 70 Ideas Poster to bloggers who can share great stories about their blogging mistakes as well as learning experiences. And yes, when I wrote “blogger or bloggers” I mean that more than one could have the prize!

I might be subjective about who wins, but here’s just a tip, make sure it fits perfectly to the theme of my free report “Blogging Blunders”.

I’ll announce the winners during the ebook report launching. This might happen a week or so from now.

So what are you waiting for? Comment below and share your story. You could win a prize and at the same time, help me on my blog report! Win-win situation don't you think?

Don’t Ask Me For Blog Hosting Questions, Ask the Geeks

I literally groan everytime a ‘techie’ question lands in my inbox. ‘Liane, what this and that do you recommend?’ ‘Liane, how do I make this or that work?’ ‘Liane, can you help me fix this or that?’

See, as much as I want to help you (and I really do!), I’m a bit as technologically challenged as you probably are. Sure I can help you with moving domains and stuff, or surely with designs, but to anything that requires expert opinions about the web, let’s just say I’d rather leave it to the real experts.

So here’s one of the blogger FAQs (frequently asked questions), where should you host your blog?

I do have my recommendations of course, but really, for a person like me who gets easily swayed by good catch phrases, I’d rather have you forwarded to the guys that could really help you decide.

Enter the Web Hosting Geeks!

For The Second Time Around

I’ve already reviewed web hosting geeks months ago. Just last week, an offer landed at me again and it seems the geeks over there wants another shot at the spotlight. Who am I to deny that right? Lesson here fellow bloggers- always love repeat clients :p

I’m trying my best to not be redundant guys, though of course I have to keep opinions as honest as possible even if, yes, they might be redundant.

What is Web Hosting Geeks?

Think of it as a directory, but only listing all the web hosting companies in existence. A web directory is always the best place to go to when you need to find your most ideal web host companies, and might I add is reluctant to ask blogging tips people like me (LOL).

So why should you rather go to Web Hosting Geeks than to me?

Easy. Because these places already lays out in front of you all possible information you need to decide for your web host choice. More than that, their own ranking systems and comparison charts makes it easier for you to fully understand (and recognize right away) the pros and cons of each companies.

Basically it just makes decision easier for you.

They Are The World’s Largest What?

Web Hosting Geeks, which is affiliated with Web Hosting Ratings, is the world's largest independent web hosting directory since 2002. That means 8 years of credible and comprehensive online track record.

I’ve been to a number of web hosting directories, and by far, I really do think they’ve been the biggest and the comprehensive listing available.

Keep Track of the Best Web Hosts of the Year

Web Hosting Geeks keeps an annual track of the best web hosts provider for every year, like companies with dedicated hosting, and domain hosting for example. These are the guys you have to thank for because they make competition tougher for the companies (hence, all the better services for you).

There are various award categories depending on various functionalities that customers are looking for web site hosting. So really, it’s not just about which is the number one company, but rather, which company is number one for your needs.

Just check out their ratings of the year if you still haven’t made up your mind.

So guys, next time you have a hosting question, better ask them alright?

Disclaimer: You bet this is a sponsored review (for the second time around), all opinions are 100% mine. Don’t want these kinds of posts? Then how on earth am I supposed to keep this blog running on a student allowance? Go here.

Most people are reasonable, that's why they only do reasonably well.

It's human to make the safe decision.
The problem with making safe decisions is that so is everyone else.

You're a lonely drop in the vast ocean of the world wide web.
Millions of other people competing with you, and the numbers are rising.

You will never have a chance to get your piece of the cake, right ?

WRONG!

It's never a bad time to start a blog, unless it's a mediocre one.

In order to create a blog that will make a splash (and earn you a living), you have to make it stand out.

And in order to stand out, you have to start making some unreasonable decisions.

There are over 90 million bloggers in the world, but there's only one:

• I-Justine. She's dominating video blogging with her silly but highly entertaining style.

• Seth Godin. He refuses Twitter and Blog comments and offers genuine and provocative idea viruses. His blog is one of the most successful blogs in the world.

• Gary Vaynerchuk. He built a digital empire around a wine video blog. He's louder than a D1 Double Bass System wired to a Boing 747, but that doesn't seem to bother his millions of fans.

They are all unreasonable, but they're also dominating their niche in the web.

What does this mean for you?

You might say "Yeah, good for them, but I still have a blog that less than 2 people subscribe to."

Stop crying and start creating!

You have a beautiful brain, why not use it?

Be unreasonable in the way you write your content or promote your services.
Instead of comparing yourself to others in the online world, ask yourself „What can I create so remarkably unique that people have no choice but to come to me?“

And I don't mean that you have to reinvent the web here. (Maybe you should)
It simply means that you have to be a little more creative with the way you promote your blog and/or your services.

Maybe you can:

• Create an ebook that's wickedly designed and mentally mind-blowing

• Invent a service unlike any other in the known web galaxy

• Make your blog so personal and whimsical that people have no choice but to subscribe to it

Space is the real limit here. I'm sure you can come up with more creative ways on how to enrich the online world with your unique existence.

Do you know George Bernard Shaw ?

He was a famous playwright from a forgotten century. I've never read any of his books (shame on me), but his quotations never cease to illuminate my mind.

I want to leave you with my favorite one:

The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.

If you want to make a splash in the online world, you have to differentiate yourself.

Start by making some unreasonable decisions.

It might just be the most reasonable thing to do.

Mars Dorian is the man behind The Creative Crusade. He's in love with the internet and he shares his epic ideas on how to be remarkable online. You can follow Mars on Twitter here @marsdorian

How I Smashed Frustration – Literally

Liane's note: This is a short miscellaneous rant. You’ve been warned. Let’s have a life lesson for a change!

Approximately 7 hours ago (at the time of writing), I was so frustrated after taking that dreaded political science exam of mine. You know why? Because I didn’t get a perfect score in that subject that I studied every single day for the past 5 months!

Geez. I’m so frustrated. Do you know what it feels like to want something so bad, so you worked hard for it and eventually didn’t reach the right mark? My friend (who took the same exam and, I could say is more frustrated than I was) vented out at me in our McDonalds dinner, “you know what Liane, it’s worse to get 99% than 95%!” True enough.

What exactly did I do to prepare for that exam:
• I review my notes every single day
• I’ve never been absent, or cut classes
• I’ve never been late (except that one time when I got confused of the room number)
• I’ve read the Philippine Consitution (articles 6, 7 & 9) more than 11 times (because our professor said that it takes that amount for mastery)
• I didn’t check my Facebook and Twitter accounts
• I even slowed down, or kinda went on hiatus, on blogging!

It came to the point where I got sick reviewing because it feels like the information’s getting too redundant in my head.

But seems like it wasn’t enough. I haven’t perfected it! Though of course I’m pretty sure that I’m going to pass that class.

You might think this is way overboard (trying to perfect an exam), but seriously, I just want to prove something, plus I really want this professor to remember me for life. It was so frustrating to do all those things and still fall short. Sigh.

The only good thing I can say perhaps was that I got over it quickly.

See, here’s a life tip (and not just a blogging tip), if you’re frustrated at something, re-channel it to something fun and productive.

Like what I did. After that exam, I headed out to the badminton gym. I won a game (that was fun) and even challenged the guys for a doubles match (which I won again).

It just feels good to release my frustration with a series of ‘smash’ (if you don’t know badminton, it’s the equivalent of ‘spike’ in volleyball. If you don’t know both, well you’re hopeless. Kidding). And oh, sorry to the guys who got hit. I think they were purely ‘accidental’ *wink*

How about you? If ever you’re frustrated about something, find a good way to release it. If you like badminton too, go hit shuttlecocks! Just go hit anything! Unless of course it’s a human being.

p.s. but it’s okay though to hit a person ‘accidentally’ with a shuttlecock. lol

Now Open for Guest Bloggers

Interested in guest posting? I also accept posts about entrepreneurship, empowerment, motivational posts as well as resource posts. My favorites would be real experience/story posts. Tip: search the archives first and make sure you're not going to write a duplicate content.

What's you're preferred writing style?

I like a splash of humor (or anything that hints of your personality). But it's not just about entertainment, it has to have solid content first and foremost. The foundation should always be a lesson or tip, then you can play around with any writing style you like. As much as possible, refrain from using a stream of profanities. Let's keep this blog Rated G people ;)

Why would you usually reject a post?

Usually I won't. But here's the must-not-do checklist. Grammar is basic. Proofreading is something I expect you ought to master by now. If it's just minor flaws, I'll fix them. But if it's all over your work, then sorry. Another thing is the quality of your content. Yes, it is subjective. Feel free to complain if I reasoned out something about 'quality'. But I think after years of blogging, I can already sift out the good from the -err- bad.

Can I regularly write for Better Blogging For Bloggers?

You have to send a batch of guest posts first. It came to a point wherein I’d finish writing a random three-page-essay first than a term paper that’s due tomorrow. I know, so ironic.

Same thing for blogging. Only a lot worse.

Bloggers continually grill themselves to write content after content because it feels so wrong to have the same post in your homepage for over a week. I followed that same unwritten law and tried to keep the regular supply of fresh posts. In 2007 (if you’re reading my blog for that long), I even advised bloggers to ‘have a regular posting frequency’.

Now I decided, I’m taking that advise back. Something’s wrong with this. Forced writing doesn’t do me any good. Nothing good at all.

Regularity Versus Quality – The Maki of Dosh Dosh case study

I learned this valuable lesson from Maki of Dosh Dosh over a year ago. I can’t really locate the exact post, nor the verbatim of the lesson, but it goes something like this:

“I don’t write just because I feel the need to write, it’s because I really have something important or valuable to say”.

If you don’t know Maki (well at least everyone is supposed to know him as the faceless pro blogger who loves anime pictures for his posts), then you’re missing out on one of the best blogging and internet marketing tips blog. He really was my idol. It goes as far as the best posts you can ever find is in Dosh Dosh (my opinion).

What Did People Say About Maki?

People used to compare him with a lot of A-listers. They said, even if Maki posts rarely, you wouldn’t mind it because of the grade A quality of his posts and the length involved in the discussion. His lengths could be really long mind you. Maki’s writing is so flawless and the information he presents are so valuable I’d even pay to read his blog. Seriously.

Sadly though, Maki rarely posts these days. But I don’t mind that either. Why? Because even in that case, every post in his archives are worth the read. Even if they’re ages old.

The Standards of Real, Valuable Posts

Here we have to re-asses what blogging really means. Right now what I’m seeing is that many (especially the newcomers) refer to blogging as regularly updating an opinion-based website. I beg to differ. I think it’s all about extending value that transcends time.

It’s like Maki’s posts. Even if it’s dated back to 2006 or sometime ago, I’d still read it simply because Maki wrote it to be timeless. Not just because his homepage seems stale with posts that he have to think of something to write about, but to the fact that he really discovered or learned something that’s worth sharing.

No More Forced Writing

I have to admit that I almost lost my interest to blogging this year. Sometimes, it’s just felt so pointless to compel yourself to update your blog. Why am I doing this in the first place? Mercifully, I realized that I’m doing it all wrong and something needs to be hammered out in this blog.

So what I’m going to do now is to scarp all my posting rules except one – blog for quality. All the other rules (like blog every 2-4 days, or have a regular post length) will go straight to the drain.

I want to make sure that I don’t end up writing worthless, random, abstract or simply obvious posts that I don’t really need to blog about in the first place. It’s a waste of time and I want to give justice to all of my readers who go here to look for usable, solid information.

After all, that’s the point of why I blog. Usable, solid information. Always that.

My Take On Chris Brogan’s Social Media 101

Just this 3rd of March, Chris Brogan (shame on you if you don’t know him) officially released his new book called the Social Media 101.

It wouldn’t take a genius to figure out what it’s all about. Social. Media. The basic stuffs. No secrets, no advance stuffs, no Chris Brogan top tricks exposed (for one, it’s almost an organized compilation of posts that you can just read at his blog). No mind blowing things, nothing that would really excite the guy who’s been looking for that missing piece in his social media campaign. In short, it’s just that. Basics.

So why does everyone (everyone in this context means including me) seems to be thrilled about it? Is it because Chris ‘social-media-genius’ Brogan wrote it himself? You bet. But let’s dig deep shall we.

Through An Entrepreneurial Perspective

I want to be clear that I’m approaching this in my entrepreneurial mode (so I’m turning off my blogging perspectives right now). Right now I’m thinking about how to promote my freelance design business through the use of social media (because as we all know, going through the traditional ad campaign can be unrealistic for a small freelance business).

Who Needs Social Media 101?

To some extent, everyone from all niches do. With the current web 2.0 age, experts agree that indeed, social media, have been instrumental for this form of web advancement. In fact, some experts goes beyond that rationale and concludes that come to think of it, web 2.0 is social media.

Given that current case, it’s obvious that I’m biased to shoving social media knowledge into everyone’s brains. Especially if you run a business, sell or promote products in the cases of affiliates, social media is your best friend.

But Why Exactly Buy It?

The thing about Social Media 101 is that ultimately, you can read most of it for free on Chris Brogan’s blog. Similar to Darren Rowse’s 31DBB Workbook or maybe even the Problogger Book - Secrets to a Six Figure Income (which was co-authored by Chris too), most of the contents are actually accessible if you just click at the 31DBB category at the Problogger footer.

It’s no secret because Chris tells so himself. The only catch perhaps is unlike Darren’s 31DBB, there’s no category wherein you can easily access the content. It’s basically splattered everywhere in [chrisbrogan.com] and it would probably take days before you can find and compile everything together.

Though the reason why you should grab a copy is not just for mere convenience.

Actually, I’m secretly hoping that it’s more than what it seems to be.

Basic is Relative

The argument here is that if it’s just basics, then probably you can learn it too from someone else even if that person is just the average social media guy. After all, it’s just basics right?

I have a theory and this might lead to a conclusion that Social Media 101 could offer a little beyond than what it presents it does.

The theory goes like this. Let’s assume social media has 10 levels of expertise (10 being the highest). Since it’s a given than Chris is a genius in this, let’s put him in level 10. Supposing there enters an average social media guy, say he’s on level 5 and you task him to write his version of ‘Social Media 101’.

What would that level 5 guy write about?

Of course he’ll write about all the things he knows about level 1, and probably touching a little on level 2. After all, level 3 is somewhat near his skill so it wouldn’t count as ‘basic’ for him.

Now we look at Chris Brogan’s level 10 case. What would he include when he writes his ‘basic’ book? He would write about level 1 of course, and then level 2…. somewhere near the end, he might probably include things on level 3 and 4.

So, when Chris Brogan talks about his basic social media knowledge, he’s not talking about what you would consider as basic, but what he considers as such.

Very much explains why you’d rather learn it his way than some average social media guy’s way.

Another Bestseller For Chris?

Aside from the fact that I like the book cover (can’t help that I’m such a sucker for book covers), the reason why I think this would top the book charts again is the fact that it’s very much targetive to the demands of the current internet people.

There’s a current influx of people (especially bloggers and entrepreneurs like me) who’re in dire need of a social media bible. I’d say it’s more of a necessity than a fancy read.

I’m just not sure though whether it would outrank Chris’ Trust Agents (about using the web to build Influence, Improve Reputation, and Earn Trust) . After all, that’s the book that spurred a momentum for genuine change on what it really means to be ‘trusted’.

Of course that’s just my take. What’s yours?

I Stared At My Wall and Got 70 Posting Ideas

If you’re wondering if I mean that literally- the answer is yes.

Now if you’re thinking how I did it, well, there’s this one missing secret. I’m not just staring at a bare wall. I'm staring at something hanging at my wall.

→Launching of the 70 Ideas for your Next 70 Posts

If you hate writer's block, if you constantly need ideas to blog about, if you have problems in finding inspiration, and if you want a base you can use to build up more ideas (be it for networking, making money online, professional topics etc.), then I got an answer as simple as something you can tape right at your workspace.

Red light's blazing! The official launch has begun!

What are the results?

..."Inspiration right at my workspace!"

..."It's not just about being able to write a new topic at my will, it's about having to choose what exactly I want to write about! Today, I'd write about mmo, and poof! I got an idea!"

..."Writer's block? Why is that a problem again?"

Why paid exactly?

I don't sell ideas. That's a sure thing (though of course you can only get the complete 70 list if you purchase the poster). What I do sell is the design for the poster compilation of the 70 ideas.

The design isn't exactly something that I'd just finish overnight. That did took a great deal of artistic effort, research on design tricks and perseverance in putting everything together. This is my first shot too on trying to merge together my two interests- blogging and designing.

→THE 70 IDEAS FOR YOUR NEXT 70 POSTS - POSTER EDITION

Why not delivered made-to-order poster?

My first plan was to really sell made-to-order posters of the 70 ideas. But as I was searching for good companies that could offer the service, I came to realize one thing. I'd be needing to raise the price so that it can accommodate the expenses for the printing and delivery.

Of course, I don't want to raise the price. I thought too, we both could save a lot if I don't do made-to-order and I'll just give you the rights to print it in any way you want.

Because of this, of course I have managed to keep a low price plus be able to automatically send you the poster image plus the complete list.

If you don't want to print it and just use the list in your pc, that's just fine too!

Join the Contest!

For the official launch, I'm giving away 5 copies for free! All you have to do is to either retweet this post or stumble this page. Oh, and please do personalize your tweets.

People who follow me in Twitter and subscribe to my blog are automatically entered in this contest too (you have to comment below though for me to know). Just to be sure, do as many things as possible. Well, a retweet and a stumble is just like a finger exercise right?

Just leave a comment below so I'll know that you've entered the contest.

One winner will be announced per day until all 5 bonus prizes are given away.

Winners' List!

• 1st winner (02/27/10) congratulations to Ben Lang of Ben-Lang Dot Com!

• 2nd winner (02/28/10) congratulations to James Richmond of TheInfoPreneur!

• 3rd winner (03/01/10) congratulations to Fazreen of Fazreen Dot Com!

*end of draw. minimum number of contestants for the 4th and 5th draw not met*

Winner drawn using the random picker of random.org

Why buy it now?

Surely something as affordable and as extremely useful as this is one heck of a good deal.

Oh, did I mentioned that I'm giving you a 25% Discount if you type in "LIANEROCKS" on the promo code box? That's only for the first 100 people by the way. if you won't use that, I bet someone else will.

Be inspired. Be free from writer's block. Be empowered by ideas.

→THE 70 IDEAS FOR YOUR NEXT 70 POSTS - POSTER EDITION

Let’s Be Brutally Honest

When I comment, I usually raise a contrary point.

Because really, If I where to say you were so perfect, so right, so genius, how much would that really help? It would inspire you of course. But, would it make you do more, think better, or push further?

Rarely does it go beyond feeding one’s ego.

We like people to agree at us. We like people to reinforce what we say. We. Like. People. To. Like. Us. Up to the point where we see people repeatedly saying all the ‘nice’ stuffs again and again.

So what exactly is wrong with that? Nothing really. But that doesn’t mean either that things shouldn’t get any better. Right?

The Blogosphere Cheering Machine!

I liked the fact that most bloggers are… well… a nice bunch of people. We’re all very supportive, we exchange thoughts and ideas, we contribute on each other’s blogs, we help out even if we stay till the wee hours of the morning, we basically form very strong friendships even though it’s based online.

Makes you want to live in a real community of bloggers right?

The Side Effects

I think, at some point, these things have developed a culture of mediocrity. The danger of being average.

The problem is that like a Cheering Squad, we just keep on cheering and cheering even though at some point, we shouldn’t. Or on many instances, we should have acted like the Guidance Counselor and have told someone how some things went wrong, or on how things could be better.

Why I Need You To Be Brutal

Just to clarify. Brutal doesn’t mean to hate. Brutal in this context means to be blunt.

I need you to be brutal because you have to reach that level wherein I’d have to listen. Same goes for others. If you want to disagree with something, don’t say ‘maybe that’s true, but I think…’. Instead, directly say what you have in mind. ‘I think you’re wrong because…’

If you give leeway for someone to be just okay about it, that won’t help. Be brutal.

Command someone to actually take your point.

Why I Need You To Be Honest

Simply because I need it. Simply because bloggers desperately need it.

In my niche where I blog and give blogging tips advice, I need not only to be confident, but to be sure as well of what I’m talking about. In Make Money Online, product reviews might all end up to be fabricated… and many unsuspecting purchasers could be in potential danger or getting their hard-earned money go to waste. The list goes on and on of course.

I need you to be honest because that’s how we should filter out the bad from the good. The scam from the genuine. The lie from the truth. More than that, it’s a way of driving people to push forward. It makes them think of correcting their ways or generating a better idea.

The thing about honesty is that it compels us to make things better.

So let’s make a deal. Let’s be brutally honest. I would, and so will you. Because as my words affects other people’s minds, the same way as your words affect mine too.

After all, if you’re really that perfect, or right, or genius… then I’d be brutally honest about that too.

A Creative Lesson From Steve Jobs

Within a few days, I’d be really so busy in officially launching my first product ever. And yes, for you who’ve known the soft-launch of it, it’ll be over soon.

What I’d like to talk right now is a vague idea called creativity. It’s so much abstract to tell you the truth (heck, even abstractness is called creativity), and what I’d want to do now is to translate it to something more tangible for you to use.

You see, creativity makes the difference. If you think hard work, or perseverance, or talent, or plain geniusness is enough- then you’ve totally forgot what your preschool teachers have told you.

You need to be creative, too.

Because, believe it or not, in this world, creativity, or the lack thereof, can make or break you. Steve Jobs knows. I took his example.

“Good Artists Copy, Great Artists Steal”

When I first heard this quote from Steve Jobs (the God of Apple), I automatically understood what he meant. In fact, it came to me as a sort of epiphany- something that I’ve been looking for and just felt glad to finally discover.

Nobody owns a single idea.

Sure, we have patents and the likes to protect ones own invention or trademark, but when it comes to ideas, all of us have equal rights to access them in any way we want.

The only catch perhaps is that it’s always better to be the first to conceptualize and use it.

But if the first one who though of it didn’t make things right (or you can make it better), then steve jobs gave us a golden rule to follow: “Good artists copy, great artists steal”.

Better Steal Than Copy, Says Steve Jobs

What’s the big difference between both you say?

People who copy create duplicates. They adjust a little, tweak a little, but overall, it’s just the same thing. If you where the buyer and given the choice between the original and the duplicate (or the copy version), who would you choose?

Of course, you’d still stick to the original. Even if the price difference would be a huge figure, the original would still be the winner. No one, and I mean no one, would like to settle for a ‘copy’.

People who steal are in to create a bigger game- their own game. Steve Jobs is not the first one to invent a laptop or even an operating system (say hi to Bill Gates). But he was creative. He saw where Microsoft Inc. fall short (in terms of the feel of their hardware and the massive vulnerability of their OS) and decided to make things even better.

Of course, that’s the time he founded Apple Inc.

If you think about it, Sergey Brin and Larry Page (founders of Google) weren’t the first one to make business with search engines too. Of course, there was msn (hi again Bill Gates) and altavista and they were truly big players at that time.

But Brin and Page thought something more could be done. And so they came to built the biggest, fastest, most widely used search engine ever in the planet. Google.

Creativity is About…

… looking for solutions. Always better, brighter solutions. Sometimes, it doesn’t have to be complex, and I quote Jobs again when he said....

... “simplicity is the ultimate innovation”.

UPDATE: The quote "good artists copy, great artists steal" is actually by Picasso. Looks like someone beat the great master at his own game. Quite ironic indeed! Thanks to Ben for the clarification.

Liane is Back! (and she's got loads to tell you!)

It's kinda weird talking in the third person. Lol. Anyways...

While it may seem like I disappeared from the face of the web for a complete month (because of my pledge), trust me, taking a break was the last thing on my agenda.

First thing’s first. About the reason why I disappeared.

You can read about my take about the Haiti Earthquake here and the pledge that I made because of it. While it may already seem history to you, it’s still the middle of the crisis for a lot of people in there. So for the umpteenth time, please do help.

I’m happy to because it seems my pledge didn’t turned out to be futile. I’ve received messages from bloggers about how it made them mobilize their own Haiti relief campaign. Thank you very much for all those who’ve supported me in this one. It’s not much but every single effort counts right?

So now that I’m done (for this post) talking about that, I’m gonna move on to the second part. What did I do for the past month? I’m so excited to tell you all about it right now.

From January 16 to February 16

To be honest, I thought I was really going to be taking a break for a month (since of course I can’t blog). Then again, there’s still some marketing work I could do… or guest posting (which I kind of slacked at). I tried doing those things, but eventually felt it was all in vain since you can’t really market much if you don’t freshen up your content.

After almost a week, I thought I was gonna end up breaking my pledge. I’m itching to post a new article. It felt as if I were cheating on my blogging regimen.

Operation Refocus Passion

But of course, I can’t just pull back and say it’s been some kind of rash mistake about the one month period. I was adamant (or stubborn you can say) to stick with it till the end.

So I figured out, I should find something else to do. Rechannel all the blogging energy to something that could turn out as productive.

The solution was simple- I found back my passion to graphic designing. I downloaded as much tutorial ebooks, brushes, gradients and all sorts of cool downloads. After a few short days, I was happily busy again.

I also focused it into writing and creating projects which I plan to release once I get back into blogging (meaning now!). I designed, I wrote ebooks, I learned new things.

What’s surprising is that within a month of supposedly idleness, it turned out to be more productive than I could ever imagined!

How Productive? Here’s What I Accomplished Within One Month

First Accomplishment
I founded a freelancing business. (holy cow!) I call it, Twarks Twitter Designs
Visit site: http://www.Twarks.NET

Brief Story: In my previous post, you can very well see my addiction to both designing and twitter. Well, one day, I was just visiting profiles after profiles and I came to realize something, that there are so many twitter profiles out there that doesn’t have their own professional twitter background. What a loss for branding right?

There I found an opportunity. Since I’m fond of designing my twitter background, why not turn it into something profitable? Viola. Twarks Twitter Designs was created!

This is my first shot to being a freelancer-slash-entrepreneur and I’m pretty hyped up with this venture. I might be biased if I tell you all good things about this, so if you’re interested to know more, why not read George Serradinho’s review of Twarks.

Second Accomplishment
Release of the 70 Ideas For Your Next 70 Posts – Poster Edition (see it here!)

And guess what, it's happening right now!

Brief Story: Remember the post "The 50 Ideas For Your Next 50 Posts"? Since a lot, and I mean A LOT, of you found it to be extremely useful (imagine having a hard time coming up with a single post idea when you can have 50 of them right away), I thought of a way to make it even better.

I came up with two things. First, I expanded it to 70 Ideas (an additional 20 more post ideas!) and second of all, since I'm into designing for the past month, I created a ready-to-print poster which you can mount right at your workspace (say hello to instant ideas!)

And I have a surprise for you, I'm doing a soft launch of it right now!

See the soft launch of the 70 Ideas For your next 70 Posts - Poster Edition

You can see the larger, upclose preview here

I plan to make an entire new post dedicated for it on the launch. But since I’m pretty game to making my comeback a blast, might as well do the soft launch now. The poster looks stunning you have to admit.

Learn more on how to get the poster of the 70 Ideas For Your Next 70 Posts.

My Comeback Surprise For You (Hint: Discounts!)

Since the past 30 days (or one month) had been such a success for me (even being unable to blog), I want to give you something useful. No other than promo codes! Since I'm just starting out with Twarks, I'm very much looking for the first batch of clients.

If you order right now, you're going to get 30% OFF on your professional Twitter background. The whole one month, thank goodness, didn't turn out to be a lazy month. Well actually, it been more than a blast! I founded my first business... and... I created my first ever product!

Not bad for missing in action for a month right? Just glad to be back :)

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://www.betterbloggingforbloggers.com/2010/02/liane-is-back-and-shes-got-loads-to.html' title='Liane is Back! But that doesn't mean the disaster is over... no, not yet.

Bloggers, please help support the continual efforts for the Haiti relief operations. I know many of you have already done your part. But please, thousands of people are still in grave need. More support is needed for rebuilding Port-au-Prince.. or even just for the rehabilitation of the survivors.

There are many ways to continue helping.

If you can,

If you still have something to share,

If you feel how lucky you are,

Please... spread the buzz more about how people can help. As bloggers, we are very good at that.

You Don't Need To Be a Six-Figure Blogger to Help

Remember the words, "Bloggers Unite"? Well this time, it could finally serve a real, humanitarian purpose.

SEE HAITI SUPPORT DISASTER
RELIEF PAGE c/o GOOGLE

I encourage you too to spread the word not just by tweeting (oh please) but by actually writing a post about it. Just one post wouldn't ruin your blog (and it's not even because it's out of topic).

You are a blogger. You can do more than just tweeting. This is one of those cases where 140 characters doesn't give justice.

Offer what you can. Even if you have a mere 5 readers a day, at least that's five other people who might do something too! Now what about if you've got a hundred views a day, or thousands (calling those a-list bloggers)?

The thing is, you've constantly promise to help your readers, now you can actually do something that's even greater. You can hep people... survive.

I Don't Wish To Spark a Movement

If you write a post, you don't even need to link to this article. IN FACT, I DON'T WANT YOU TO LINK TO THIS AT ALL. That's because I don't want other bloggers to consider this as a publicity stunt (because some others could be so shallow thinking that someone's just doing it for link baits or traffic schemes).

Please, an estimated 500,000 people died. This is no time to do tricks.

My Pledge - To Stop Posting For A Month

BECAUSE: I want to keep this post as the most visible in the blog homepage as long as I possibly can. I have reasonable daily traffic to probably reach out to a significant amount of people. This is the only concrete form of commitment I could give to the relief operations. Sorry. I'm just a teenager.

Today (in my case) is January 16. I'll be posting again in February 16.

and please don't think I'm trying to use an excuse to escape posting duties (think of all the product launches happening in January and early February and the income opportunity that I'd have to pass). Sheesh. Why am I always defending my actions?

Rescheduling and Some Plans

Because of this, the things I've promised as on January (especially the release of my great ebook) would have to be moved further. Again, another loss to me.

Meanwhile, I'm not really saying goodbye to blogging for one month (only to posting in this blog). I'll try to be visible through other methods like guest posting (hopefully to drive more people to see this post). And of course, I'll still be in touch through emails and tweets.

You Know, I Felt That Haiti Earthquake

Literally.

I was lying in bed, just reading a book and felt the ground move to and fro like a squigly jelly. It was nowhere near 7.0 magnitude, but I definitely have felt it.

Now it makes me think, since I was in my dormitory at that time, there would be no way I could escape from a quake of that intensity had it occurred on our land.

I am very lucky. You are too.

But what about Haiti?

Yours most truly,

-Liane

p.s. today's (Januray 16) exactly my Dad's birthday and i dedicate this post to him.
